What are the most important winter car care tips?

The wet and cold weather finds a way to wreak havoc on your vehicle, even if you’re parked in your garage overnight. Perhaps the three most important things to consider leading into winter are:

  1. Winter tires/tread depth
  2. Winter-ready wiper blades
  3. A fully-charged, operational battery

1) Winter tires

Undoubtedly the most important part of getting your vehicle ready for winter driving, having winter tires is a must for when the temperature drops. You can read more about it here, but the reality is just having winter tires isn’t enough. You’ll want to check on the tread depth of your winter tires to ensure you’re getting the kind of grip necessary to accelerate, stop, and navigate all the driving between those two things.

For years “the penny test” was considered accurate (enough) to get by, but we suggest using a larger coin just to be sure. Stick a toonie in the tread of your tire, and if the tire comes all the way up to the bear’s feet, you’re good. If it only comes up to the letters around the silver ring of the toonie, you’re probably in serious need of a new set of winter tires. Of course, if you’re unsure, you can come by Golden Mile Chrysler and have a member of our service department take a look as well.

2) Winter-ready wiper blades

Windshield wiper blades are one of those things that are easy to forget about—that is, until you’ve got some serious snowfall to contend with. An easy (and inexpensive) way to prep your vehicle for winter is by replacing your wiper blades with a winter-specific option. Not only are they designed to keep from getting clogged up with snow, but they’ll ensure you can see the road and proceed safely.

3) A fully charged battery

Your vehicle’s battery is highly susceptible to the cold conditions of winter, which is why having your battery tested before it gets too cold is a great way to prep your vehicle for winter. After all, a dead battery means a dead car, and we can’t think of too many worse things than being stranded somewhere on a freezing winter day with a vehicle that just won’t start.

Ensuring that your vehicle is properly prepared for winter is easy, and can save you from some major headaches down the road when the mercury drops and driving conditions become more difficult.
